"Shen" (Spirit), as an integral component of the medical model of “Xing-Jing-Qi-Shen" (Body-Essence-Qi-Spirit), requires in-depth elucidation of its modern scientific implications. Based on the theoretical distinction in traditional Chinese medicine between “Yuan Shen” (innate spirit) and “Shi Shen” (acquired spirit), this paper proposes that the structural framework of DNA contained in the fertilized egg serves as the carrier of “Yuan Shen”, with its genetic and epigenetic information regarded as “Yuan Shen” itself. Meanwhile, the neural network in the developed brain is considered both a manifestation of “Yuan Shen” and a carrier of “Shi Shen,” with its functions primarily attributed to “Shi Shen”. This hypothesis is demonstrated from three perspectives: (1) The early establishment of the nervous system during embryonic development and the distribution of neural crest cells throughout the body confirm the pioneering and governing role of "Spirit as the master of life." (2) The parallel development and pre-established connections between the brain and the viscera during morphogenesis illustrate the dynamic logic of "unity of body and spirit, mutual rooting of each other." (3) The earlier maturation of visceral functions and the later dominance of brain functions explain the ultimate realization of "innate nature as the foundation, acquired nature as the function." Studies have shown that from neural tube formation to neural crest migration, and from visceral morphogenesis to neural network refinement, the entire process of embryonic development represents the modern biological expression of how an individual''s “Shen" (Spirit) evolves from an intangible "information" into tangible functions. This integration lays the embryological groundwork for the "Xing-Jing-Qi-Shen" medical model.
